Kini Carrasco: A Lifetime Commitment to Sports

Kini Carrasco, the renowned Spanish Paralympic triathlete, has left an indelible mark on the history of sports. His journey into athletism and subsequently triathlon began after a motorcycle accident at the age of 20, which changed his life, leading him to leave basketball and reinvent himself as an athlete. Since then, he has competed in 100 international events, participated in three Paralympic Games (Seoul, Barcelona, Sydney), and has become a symbol of overcoming challenges and dedication.

At Outbraker, we had the pleasure of interviewing him, and we want to share his story with all of you.

A passionate athlete: the Story of Kini

When Kini Carrasco shares his daily life with us, he mentions that he focuses his day on training future sports talents, “so that they can fulfill their dreams,” but he also has time for his daily workouts. Kini plays a crucial role as a FERTRI coach in the “Paralympic Promises” project, working on the identification and development of young talents in Paratriathlon.

As a role model for these young athletes, Kini’s approach to competition goes beyond winning, prioritizing enjoyment and giving his best in every event. Reflecting on his extensive career, Kini shares various anecdotes, showing his ability to overcome obstacles:

“And there would be many anecdotes to tell, but perhaps, one that stands out, especially in terms of mechanics… Once while assembling my bike, I cut the cables that go to the gears, and we had to patch them up as best we could to get through it. And another, it was the time to compete and I didn’t have my bike because it got lost in the trip. Well, these are things that happen.”

From Athletism to Triathlon: accumulating experiences

Kini’s transition to triathlon in 2009 marked a new chapter in his life. What started as a challenge turned out to be a sport he has been enjoying for over 11 years. When we ask him how he feels while cycling, Kini responds:

“For me, cycling always involves a risk, an extra risk because riding a bike with one hand is already complicated, especially in challenging situations, right? And before meeting you [Outbraker], something that was unthinkable (…) having your bike brake well using only that lever you have, and having both brakes brake at the same time, the braking has been very important.”

Thus, Kini emphasized the importance of safety in every ride and praised the innovation of Outbraker’s brake splitter for giving him that braking security.

What can we expect in the coming years?

Looking towards the future, Kini plans to retire from elite competition after the Paralympic Games in Paris 2024, but he won’t leave challenges. His next goal is the Multisport Championship in Pontevedra in 2025. Additionally, he mentions that as long as he has the strength to do it, he will continue in charitable initiatives, as he has been doing for years with the Juegaterapia Foundation and charity marathons, among other projects.

Beyond being an elite athlete, Kini Carrasco is an example of dedication, overcoming challenges, and commitment. His story inspires us to keep growing and striving to improve ourselves every day.

To Kini: Thank you for sharing your experience. We hope you continue being a source of motivation for us for many more years!
