Outbraker Testimonials: Andrea Miguélez

Andrea Miguélez was born in 2003 into a family deeply in love with sports. From a young age, she shared this passion with her parents and her brother. All of them were federated athletes and they instilled in her a passion for physical activity, marking the beginning of the story of this young promise in Spanish sports. From Outbraker, we have the opportunity to interview her.

At just over 20 years old, Andrea is a triathlete, part of the Paralympic Young Promises team and the Spanish Triathlon Team. In her daily life, as she tell us, she combines intense training sessions with her studies in diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine, along with the rewarding task of coaching young children, the pre-benjamins and benjamins of the team. From the beginning, Andrea was characterized by being a determined young woman ready to challenge any obstacle, with an unwavering passion for sports and a strong determination.

Sports, a passion that runs in the family: the story of Andrea Miguélez

The athletic passion of her family materializes, in her case, in impressive achievements. At just 19, Andrea already held the title of Paralympic triathlon world and European Champion. She has been competing in triathlon for only four years, but her sights are already set on a goal: she doesn’t want just to participate in the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. She also aims to return home with a medal, and currently, her prospects are more than promising.

At the age of 6, Andrea faced an operation that would change her life, leaving her unable to walk or gesture. She embarked on a path of recovery, where dance played a crucial role. She overcame the challenges, and at 11, she began her journey in triathlon. Despite continuous challenges, Andrea has demonstrated admirable strength.

The 2022-2023 season also brought another challenge in Andrea’s life. After conquering what would be her third gold, judges decided to reclassify her from PTS3 to PTS4 based on her abilities, stripping her of the title. However, this did not deter Andrea. On the contrary, her immense determination kept her steadfast and resolute in pursuing her goals.

Young Promises Team

As part of the Young Promises team, Andrea highlights the camaraderie and support she has received, as well as the care from the older members that she has always felt:

“I started in 2021 when I began as a Paratriathlete. It’s a great advance for those of us who start from scratch and need to go to competitions that help us discover more about this world, which can be a bit challenging at times. But, well, it’s a great step forward for us, a great help to go to competitions, train with more teammates, so I’m very happy to be part of this team.”

Although she mentions that she tends to isolate herself at times, she also recalls funny anecdotes with both teammates and other competitors at events:

“We have a quite united group in the team, with a lot of complicity among almost everyone. A pretty funny anecdote I remember is the trip to Turkey in 2022. A blind teammate helped me assemble the bike, which was a peculiar moment, but then other teammates checked it thoroughly.”

Andrea & the Outbraker Booster Splitter

When asked what using our Outbraker Splitter & Booster means for her, Andrea says:

“As soon as we got out of COVID, when I started cycling, a car almost hit me, which made me decide to adapt the bike to increase my safety. Now I feel a security that I didn’t have before, which helps me feel free on the bike.”

Like many other athletes, Andrea Miguélez decided to adapt her bike with our system to increase her safety, allowing her to experience a freedom on the bike that she didn’t have before. And now, nothing can stop her. All her efforts are now focused on the 2024 Olympic Games, and we wish her the best of luck.

Now, to those venturing into the world of triathlon, especially in the Paralympic realm, Andrea sends a message of encouragement: “Surround yourself with people who contribute a lot to you and enjoy it, let this be a job as well as a hobby, and have a great time.”

With each pedal stroke, with each stride, Andrea Miguélez demonstrates that determination and love for sports are the keys to overcoming any challenge. Her story is a reminder that when you pursue a dream with passion and determination, there are no limits that cannot be conquered.
